Women representation of trade unions should be increase…

According to census and statistic department, in 2019 women labor force is 3, 037,818. It is 35%. As well as in 2019 unemployed women percentage is 7.4%. 80,985 women were abroad.

In that year, 132 trade unions were registered and active trade unions are 1903. But space given for women in this trade unions are in very low level. Most of trade unions are with men at the forefront.

But in our country women represent from the post Prime minister to labor. But she has minor representation in trade unions.

Nimal Siripala, Minister of labor said that, structure of trade unions should be change as soon as possible. He said, even when trade unions come to discuss labor problems, there is no representation from women in those committees.  Therefore, the time has come to change trade union ordinance to make it compulsary for a fair percentage of women to hold key positions in trade unions.

The Minister made this statement at the International Women’s Day commemoration ceremony held at the Ministry of Labor yesterday (08)
