Leading prisoner rights group in the country has questioned whether there is an attempt to carry out a massacre similar to the one committed at Mahara Prison at Bussa Prison. “We now have a suspicion that this is an attempt to provoke inmates like in the Mahara prison and kill a large number of inmates.”
The General Secretary of the Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners Sudesh Nandimal Silva reminded at a media briefing held in Colombo last week that there are several precedents regarding massacres in prisons.
The suspicion stems from the use of the Boossa prison, which was used to detain people under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, to detain so-called “serious criminals”.
