There is no need for nominal national schools – Ceylon Teachers Union

The President of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union S. Priyantha Fernando stated that protests will be held in front of the colleges against the opening of colleges named as National Schools nominally by the Ministry of Education. Teachers working in schools not only in the Anuradhapura district but throughout the country are against it, he said.

He said that he had received information that politicians are preparing to reopen the schools which had been designated as national schools in the past without providing any facilities.

S. Priyantha Fernando, President of the Ceylon Teachers Union, commented on this.

During the recent past many colleges in the country were converted into national schools. As those schools become national schools, they should be provided with the necessary facilities. However, there are reports that there are plans to open only schools without providing any such facilities.

Due to the lack of support from teachers, these groups are trying to achieve their narrow goals by contacting parents and alumni associations.

We urge you not to disturb the school system by holding fake festivals in schools at this time. Provide necessary resources to schools. There is no need for unnecessary festivals. At this time we should work to raise the level of education of children.

He further said that if the MPs and ministers come to open national schools unnecessarily, the teachers of all the schools in the area will unite and protest against it.
