The Milk Powder Importers Association has announced the new prices for milk powder which will be implemented from yesterday (09) with the removal of the control price imposed by the government on milk powder.
Accordingly, the new price of a kilo of milk powder is Rs. 1155 and it has been increased by Rs. 250. The price of a 400 gram packet of milk powder has been increased by Rs. 100 and the new price is Rs. 480. But the new price of milk powder, which is already around 400 rupees, will exceed 500 rupees.
The Cabinet of Ministers which met on the 7th had decided to increase the price of milk powder in view of the permission sought by the milk powder importers. When the government delayed the price hike, there was a shortage of milk powder in the market.
However, people now have doubts as to whether the increase in the price of milk powder is a deliberate move.
This is due to the fact that the printing date of the new price milk powder packets is October 01. Even when the government allowed the price increase on the 7th, the question arose as to how these milk powder companies would print milk powder packets quoting the new price.
This has also been questioned on social media platforms.
Meanwhile, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Minister of State for Cooperatives, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection said that the removal of control prices for goods was due to the need for equity between the three parties, the manufacturer, the consumer and the trader.
The Minister had stated that the prices of essential commodities in the world market had gone up in the recent past and that the government was reluctant to impose that burden on the people and that all possible steps had been taken to that end and that the control price had been implemented as one of the steps.
