At the last session of the UN Human Rights Council, it was stated that Sri Lanka was not fulfilling the basic tenets of human rights. This document has been submitted to dispel those criticisms.

The 13-page report prepared the day before the next session of the UN Human Rights Council states that some major work is in progress or nearing completion. Copies are provided to the Colombo-based diplomatic community as well as to those in Geneva.

These include the Office of the Disappeared, the Office of Compensation (OR), the Transitional Justice Strategy, the Accountability and the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). “Regardless of the outbreak, Sri Lanka is committed to dealing with human rights issues through local processes and mechanisms and has made progress,” the report said.

The 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will begin on September 13 with an update on the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet. She focuses on strengthening Sri Lanka’s issues related to human rights, the rule of law, freedom and democracy.

The report said the commission had also conducted several hearings on the Prevention of Terrorism Act, which called for the law to be reformed in other countries in line with similar provisions. A Cabinet sub-committee and a committee of officials have been appointed to look into the matter. The government has stated that this is never biased.
