Journalist, Attorney at Dulan Dasanayake has called on the government to abolish the Press Council, which is detrimental to freedom of expression and democracy, or to establish a self – technical regulation.
He said abolish the Press Council and set up a mechanism for self-regulation! This was stated at a media briefing held in Colombo today (18). This was organized by journalists for the rights.
He further stated that the government is currently trying to strengthen the Press Council Act by stating that it is being amended and that the government had informed the society through the press to join in amending the Press Council. That of making a structure that does.
He said it was a question of whether the 1973 Press Council Act was relevant today and that it was an outdated law.
