Secretary of Defense visits Russia

A delegation from the Ministry of Defense, including the Secretary of Defense, has gone to Russia to participate in an international war drill and an arms show.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow has announced that Sri Lankan delegation from the Ministry of Defense led by Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne has visited  to participate in the International Military-Technical Forum-2021 and the International Military Games-2021.

In the middle of last month, a group of Sri Lankan military officials, including the Secretary of Defense, attended an exhibition in Turkey on arms sales.

During his visit to Russia, the Secretary of Defense of Sri Lanka met with the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Colonel General Alexander Fomin, at the Office of the Director General of International Military Cooperation in Moscow.

The meeting focused on issues related to military training, participation in international military exercises and events in the territory of both countries, sharing of experiences and promoting cooperation and close ties between the Russian and Sri Lankan Defense Studies Institutions in the military and military-technical fields. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow further stated that the two parties discussed the ongoing progress of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Russia.

The Secretary of Defense has thanked the Russian Ministry of Defense, mentioning the long standing friendship between the peoples and governments of the two countries and saluting the Russian nation for their continued support during difficult times in history, he extended an invitation to his delegation to attend the Army-2021 and International Military Games-2021 Forum.

In the end, they traditionally exchanged souvenirs and gifts.

During his visit to Russia, the delegation led by Secretary-General of the Defense (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne also met with the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev.

The meeting was also held in a cordial atmosphere and the two parties discussed bilateral security cooperation, including technical cooperation between the Armed Forces, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow said. “The two parties reaffirmed their intention to intensify relations between the two countries through the Security Council of Russia and relevant agencies in Sri Lanka.”

General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne stressed on the friendship between the peoples and governments of the two countries for over 60 years and thanked Russia for its unwavering support to Sri Lanka in the context of international and bilateral relations.
