The Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya says that if an inmate violates the quarantine laws and engages in protests or other illegal activities, he will be given maximum punishment under the prison regulations and charges of violating the quarantine law.
He says it is a serious offense for these inmates to protest on the roofs of prisons at a time when prison authorities and health authorities are taking necessary steps to control the risk of Covid-19 in prisons.
He also stated that similar protests have been held in several prisons including Welikada, Magazine and Angunakolapelessa in the last few days.
He further said that while the inmates were kept safe to control the spread of the corona virus in the prisons, they had started protesting in such an illegal manner.
