Protest of Welikada prison was ended…

It has been several days since the inmates of the Welikada Prison started protesting on the roof. Their request was for a four-year review process.

Lohan Ratwatte, Minister of State for Prison Management and Rehabilitation visited the Welikada Prison today (05) to inquire into the matter.

There, the inmates on the roof came down from the roof and discussed their problems.

The Minister said that the Ministry of Prison Management and Prison Rehabilitation had already taken note of the four-year review process and the pardon of prisoners with full disabilities and chronic diseases and those over 75 years of age. He said that arrangements have been made to release prisoners on bail for minor offenses.

Another request was that the Minister of State inform the inmates about the systematic and expeditious process of PCR testing for the Covid-19 virus in prisons, and instructed the inmates to inform the inmates of all the problems of the inmates without repeating such protests.

Finally, the Minister told the media that the four-year period would be expedited on the instructions of His Excellency the President and that he would represent all detainees and suspects who could be released on bail for any reasonable reasons.

He has stated that he will take all possible measures with the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army to eradicate the Covid-19 virus from prisons.
