Police have interfered with a protest in the North based on several demands, including the release of political prisoners and a reduction of commodity prices.
The new-democratic Marxist-Leninist party launched a campaign last weekend respecting health guideline by maintaining social distance and wearing masks in front of the Jaffna bus stand. Protesters demanded that the government to release all political prisoners, and that anti-democratic campaigns to be stopped, and that all people in the country be vaccinated immediately.
They emphasized that the people were greatly inconvenienced by the government’s recent increase in fuel prices and urged the government to immediately reduce the prices of fuel and essential food items.
When the protest was held, a police officer came there and commanded to stop the agitation immediately due to the country’s prevailing situation. There he was told the protesters that a large number of police officers were infected with a virus has been caught with the provincial journalist’s camera.
The provincial correspondents further say that protesters who had joined the protest were removed from the place and the police gave the organizers a short time to express their views to the media.
