The Minister of Public Defense Dr. Sarath Weerasekera has informed the police should be equally careful about the internal security of the country. The Minister said that 11,700 police officers who worked for the health and safety of the people have been infected with Covid and 28 of them have died.
The Minister said that the LTTE was a terrorist organization which was easily identifiable and ISIS was not an organization but an ideology and it was not an easy matter to identify.
He said that people who engage in such activities are isolated first and then extremism can lead to terrorism and the Minister instructed the police to be vigilant in this regard.
The Minister further stated that two special investigation teams will be set up under the Senior DIG in charge of Crimes, one of which will be appointed for operations related to extortion and the underworld and the other for operations related to drug trafficking.
He was speaking at a meeting with Maj. Gen. Jagath Alwis, Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, IGP Chandana Wickramaratne and senior DIGs and DIGs on zoom technology.
