The University of Colombo Faculty of Arts teacher’s Association has sent a letter to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stating that it strongly opposes the acquisition of the two acre land on which the Muttiah Hostel of the University of Colombo is located for an urgent development project.

According to the letter, about 550 female students of the University of Colombo are being accommodated at the Muttiah Hostel and a large number of students, especially those with different abilities, are being accommodated.

The letter further states that the Muttiah Hostel is a convenient place for students to pursue their studies without any hindrance.

In particular, the Faculty of Arts Association points out that the Association is surprised that the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has taken steps to acquire this land without any discussion with the lecturers and without providing any other hostel facilities to the students.

The Faculty of Arts teacher’s Association strongly urges Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to reconsider the above order of the Urban Development Authority.
