Athula Seelaman Arachchi, General Secretary of the United Grama Niladhari Association of Sri Lanka states that he commenced his duties from yesterday (01) in accordance with the new directives of the Ministry of Public Service, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The Ministry of Public Service had ordered all Grama Niladharis to remain on duty on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays of the week with effect from yesterday (01).
According to the order, Grama Niladharis are required to work in their offices on weekdays from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm and on Saturdays from 12.30 pm.
Athula Seelaman Arachchi further stated that there are 360 vacancies for Grama Niladharis and out of the 1,500 vacancies that have existed since 2019, only 1,140 vacancies have been filled.
The Chief Secretary points out that the non-appointment of officers to 360 Grama Niladhari Divisions has created a problem for their administration.
Due to this one Grama Niladhari in some areas has to perform his duties in several divisions, he said.
