National Week” on Road Safety

 

The Government has decided to declare a National Week on Road Safety in view of the increasing number of deaths due to road accidents in Sri Lanka.

According to the government, there were 2023 fatal road accidents in the country last year and 2114 people were killed.

Today, 8-10 people are killed in road accidents every day, and the majority of them are men.

As a result, their dependents are becoming increasingly vulnerable, and the government says the number is growing year by year.

Of the 2023 fatal road accidents reported last year, 963 were related to motorcycles, resulting in 987 deaths.

According to the Cabinet Decision Announcement issued by the Government Information Department on April 3, nearly 500 deaths are reported annually due to three wheeler and lorry accidents.

In view of this, a National Road Safety Week will be launched from November 21, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Accident Victims. The National Council for Road Safety has focused.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Transport to declare a National Road Safety Week with effect from Sunday 21st November 2021 and to hold such a week in November annually.
