MP Premalal acquitted and released

Premalal Jayasekara who was sentenced to death has been acquitted by the Court of Appeal.

In addition to MP Premalal Jayasekara, the court also acquitted former Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councilor Nilantha Jayakody and former Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Dharshana.

The Attorney General has appeared before the Ratnapura High Court against MP Premalal Jayasekara, former Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councilor Nilantha Jayakody and former Chairman of the Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Vajira Dharshana for shooting dead a man and injuring two others during a political rally in Kahawatta during the 2015 presidential election. The case was filed.

After a lengthy trial, the Ratnapura High Court convicted the three accused, including Premalal Jayasekara, on July 31, 2020 and sentenced them to death.

However All the three accused, including MP Premalal Jayasekara, had appealed to the Court of Appeal to acquit themselves of all charges on the ground that they had been sentenced to death illegally.

After Court of Appeal today (31) ordered the release of all three, including Primalal Jayasekara, from the charges.
