Many of the SJB members will rejoin UNP in the future.

UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara says that even those who have not yet joined the UNP will have to join the party as they cannot remain political orphans.

He said this, commenting on the latest political situation that has arisen with the arrival of former Prime Minister and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Parliament.

He says that in addition to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, the UNP has the opportunity to represent the largest number of members in local government bodies including Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas. He also states that the United National Party is currently the second largest party in all local government bodies in the country.

Palitha Rangebandara points out that although the UNP’s power has diminished due to the support of local government members for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya in the recent past, nearly 1,500 local government members are now representing the UNP again. Local government councilors are expected to rejoin the UNP in the near future.
