Just as Sri Lankan fishermen enter Indian waters, the problems that arise when Indian fishermen enter Sri Lankan waters have been around for a long time. Recently, a group of Sri Lankan fishermen were attacked in India.

Against this backdrop, the 31st International Maritime Boundary Meeting between the Sri Lanka and Indian Navy was held online yesterday (29) at the Lighthouse Restaurant premises at the Navy Headquarters, Colombo.

The meeting was held to exchange views on the steps to be taken to overcome the common challenges faced by the two navies by enhancing mutual understanding between the navies and the Coast Guard Departments.

The 31st Annual Meeting of the Sri Lanka Navy was presided over by the Commander of the Northern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Priyantha Perera. Chadha – Flag Officer Commanding Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area) participated online.

During the meeting, the Indian side exchanged views on the measures being taken by the Indian side to curb smuggling across Indian waters, the measures to be taken to prevent the entry of Sri Lankan fishermen into Indian waters and the measures to be taken to educate the Indian fishing community on the steps to be taken to prevent Indian fishing vessels from entering Sri Lankan waters. The meeting focused on measures to be taken by both sides to prevent Indian fishing vessels from entering Sri Lankan waters, as well as measures to be taken by Indian fishermen to attack Sri Lankan fishermen and destroy fishing gear. The Sri Lankan side also exchanged views with the Indian side on preventing the use of Indian and Sri Lankan fishing vessels by smugglers for the transportation of narcotics and illicit goods into Sri Lankan waters.

The two sides also exchanged views on increasing border patrols to curb illegal activities violating the maritime boundaries of the two countries and strengthening the procedures for expeditious exchange of information between the two countries.

Director of Naval Operations Commodore Nishantha Peiris, Deputy Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Commodore Janaka Nissanka and other members of the Sri Lanka Navy were present at the meeting.
