Lohan Ratwatte, Minister of State for Prison Management and Rehabilitation said that, an interim report has been submitted regarding the clash at Mahara Prison. Accordingly, we have taken steps to resolve the issues in the Mahara Prison based on that interim report. All problems in the Mahara Prison have been resolved by now, at Angunakolapelessa Prison.
He was speaking after inaugurating a new multimedia unit on the 15th to connect with inmates and their families. Speaking further Minister Lohan Ratwatte said,
“Prison officials acted in accordance with the Prisons Ordinance to control the riots at Mahara Prison. There has been no international comment on this so far. There is no reason for that.
The Active Prisons Act in this country is an old one. We are working to modernize it to suit the new society. In order to reduce the overcrowding in prisons, Welikada Prison, Magazine Prison and Remand Prison will be shifted to Horana to alleviate overcrowding in prisons. We will also create a conducive environment for officers to carry out their duties in those prisons.
