Journalists’ media conference has informed to the Prime Minister that local professional journalists are also facing severe economic hardships in this disaster situation in the country and has requested local journalists also deserve Rs. 5,000 which will be given to the low income earners.
Writing a letter to the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha on Thursday, 10th June, the Federation of Media Workers’ Trade Unions informed that at a time when the country is in the throes of a corona pandemic, floods and landslides, the families of the local professional journalist also face huge defficulties in their day to day life.
“We strongly believe that you are aware about local journalists, who play a vital role in reaching out to the public, are facing dire straits, with their families without having a proper income at such a moment like this when newspaper printing, sales have been discontinued”
Dharmasiri Lankapeli, General Secretary of the Federation of Media Workers ‘Trade Unions and Karunaratne Gamage, President of the Federation of Media Workers’ Trade Unions have emphasized to the Prime Minister that local journalists are not only entitled to a decent salary and allowance, but also a community that is constantly harassed.
The Federation of Media Workers’ Trade Unions has requested Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to take this situation into consideration and to provide Rs. 5,000 which paid by the government to low income earners should pay to local professional journalists as well.
