Inquiry on Madush’s death by HRCSL…

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says that the number of deaths of suspects in police custody has increased in recent times.

Leading prisoner rights organization in the country says allegations of killing inmates have risen in recent times.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) states that eight deaths have been reported in police custody between June and October 2020.

The Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka points out that this includes the death of Samarasinghe Arachchilage Madush Lakshitha, popularly known as Makandure Madush, who was killed on October 20 while in custody.

A letter sent by the Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Ramani Muththettuwagama to the Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne has emphasized the need to investigate any violation of fundamental rights or gross violations and for the welfare of detainees by a court order or otherwise. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka is also working to make possible recommendations.
