Mahara Prison riot took place on November 29. Eleven detainees were killed and 107 others were injured in the two-day clash. It has also been confirmed that all the eight detainees were shot dead.
Also, a detainee who was seriously injured in this clash is still in a battle between life and death. Prison information has not revealed this yet, but the Prisoner’s Rights Protection Committee has revealed this.
He is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mulleriyawa Hospital in a coma who was named as P.C. N. Keerthiratne.
Keerthiratne’s mother had visited Mahara several times after the clash at the Mahara prison, where officials had told her he had sustained only minor injuries and was currently being treated at the Mahara Prison Hospital. He also said he could not be seen because of the corona condition.
The Prisoner ‘s Rights Protection Committee has inquired into the matter and it has been revealed that the prisoner was taken to the Mulleriyawa Hospital the day after the Mahara riot. He is currently in a coma with serious injuries.
The Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners says that this is a very inhumane incident.
