Sources say that the import of essentials required for local consumption is to be stopped.
The Importers’ Association states that suppliers of imported goods are refusing to ship essential goods to Sri Lanka. Thus, in the future, there will be a shortage of many essential commodities such as imported food items.
According to the association, the reason for this situation is the increasing delays in the payment of letters of credit for goods imported in the recent past.
As a result, ships of essential goods from India, China, Australia and New Zealand may not arrive and it is reported that about 3000 containers full of essential goods are already stuck in the port.
