The government has received information about several insurance companies in Sri Lanka that violate the trade union rights of employees.
The government says that a delegation from the Life Insurance Agents Association met Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva and complained about the violation of the trade union rights of life insurance agents in the insurance sector in the country.
These agents have requested the Minister to rectify the fact that several companies pay contributions to the EPF / ETF Fund for life insurance agents, but some insurance companies argue that non-payment of such contributions is a serious matter and a violation of the professional and labor rights of insurance agents.
They have also called on the Minister of Labor to amend the law to make it mandatory for life insurance sales agents employed by insurance companies to contribute to the EPF / ETF.
The insurance agents of their union, which has 45,000 members, complained to the Minister of Labor about the rights violations committed by the insurance companies, and the Minister instructed the Commissioner General of Labor, Attorney-at-Law Prabhat Chandrakeerthi, to conduct a special investigation and take necessary action.
The government has not disclosed the names of the companies accused in the complaint lodged by the Life Insurance Agents Association.
Secretary to the Ministry of Labor Mapa Pathirana, Commissioner General of Labor Prabath Chandrakeerthi, President of the Life Insurance Dealers Association WC Bandara, Secretary Isira Chathuranga, Senior Advisor Chandana Palansuriya and many other representatives were present at the discussion.
