The Ministry of Justice has appointed five committees consisting of senior lawyers to find solutions to the problems in the judiciary and to make necessary reforms within three years for the betterment of the judiciary.
The Minister of Justice has been appointed by the President’s Counsel Ali Sabri, and the appointment letters to the heads of the committees and the advisors of the committees were handed over at the Ministry of Justice yesterday (13.10.2020).
Accordingly, the new committee heads are:
Mr. UR de Silva PC – Judicial Infrastructure Development Committee
Mr. Shavendra Fernando PC – Criminal Law Reform Committee
Naveen Marapana PC – Judicial System Digitization and Automation Committee
Mr. Kaushalya Navaratne, Attorney-at-Law – Commercial Law Reform Committee
Attorney at Law Lasith Kanuwanaarachchi – Civil Law Reform Committee

The newly appointed advisors to the committee are Attorney-at-Law Sanjeewa Dasanayake, Attorney-at-Law Shehan Gunawardena, Attorney-at-Law Shamith Fernando, Attorney-at-Law Ruwantha Cooray, Attorney-at-Law Nishan Premathiratne and Attorney-at-Law Sanjith Senanayake.
Attorney-at-Law Shehani de Alwis has been appointed as the expert on the relevant committees and Attorney-at-Law Ramzi Bacha has been appointed as the Research Officer of the relevant committees.
The Minister of Justice explained the responsibilities and roles of the Heads of Committees and Sectoral Advisers and the importance of proposing reforms and solutions in the judiciary.
The Minister of Justice submitted a Cabinet Memorandum for a three year expeditious program to look into the problems in the judiciary and these committees were appointed after receiving the Cabinet approval for the relevant three year program after an in-depth study.
