The former Attorney General also said before his retirement ” he was not able to file charges against these suspects within his tenure as there were deficiencies in the police probe.
However, a press conference was held yesterday (18) at the Government Information Department premises on the topic of today and tomorrow of the Easter attack. The Cabinet Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera and Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana presided over the event.
Cabinet Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera said that there was a general delay in taking legal action as investigations into terrorist attacks were being studied in depth and that the 42 main suspects in the Easter attack could be prosecuted by mid – July.
He also said that all possible legal action would be taken to bring justice to the people affected and suffered due to the attack.
With the release of the reports of the Presidential Commission on Easter Attacks for prosecution and that the proceedings were delayed as all the evidence had to be studied to find out whether there were any discrepancies and to prevent those responsible for the attack from escaping, minister further pointed out here.
