Cabinet approval has been granted to amend the Sri Lanka Press Council Act to cover electronic and new media.
As the provisions of the Sri Lanka Press Council Act No. 05 of 1973 are restricted to the newspaper only, the Press Council should be structurally reformed to promote media education as a judicial institution for journalists and media institutions to cover electronic, print and new media. Therefore, the proposal made by the Minister of Mass Media and Information to appoint an expert committee to obtain recommendations for the amendment of the Sri Lanka Press Council Act to suit the present requirements, to obtain views and suggestions from the general public and civil society organizations and to prepare an Amendment Bill accordingly. The government has announced that it has been approved by the Cabinet on Monday, January 4th.
