Beijing, China became the first city in the world to sponsor an Olympic Games and a Winter Olympics.

The “Bird’s Nest” Stadium, used for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is also sponsoring the Winter Olympics. The Games were inaugurated by Chinese President Xi Jinping and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Buck.
The opening ceremony was colorful with various elements showcasing not only the ancient culture of China but also its technological know-how.
There were several sporting events before the opening ceremony of the Games, and many focused on the figure skating preliminary round event.
The host Chinese pair finished first, the Russian athletes competing under the Olympic flag, the United States second and the United States third.
