After 32 years in jail, Supreme Court bail to Rajiv Gandhi assassination Convict…

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to A.G. Perarivalan, convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in 1991, saying he has been in jail for more than 30 years and is entitled to be released.

Perarivalan was sentenced to death in may 1999 but in 2014 he was commuted to life imprisonment. He was arrested at the age of 19 in because he had bought the battery attached to the suicide bomber who assassinated Rajiv Gandhi.

The Tamil Nadu government has asked the Supreme Court to release the accused, including Perarivalan, in 2018.

However, the Attorney General has strongly objected to the granting of bail to the accused.
