A Parliamentary Sub-Committee has been appointed to formulate an appropriate methodology for the inclusion of ‘Law’ as a subject in the school syllabus.
Minister of Education Prof. G.S. L. This subcommittee was appointed at a special meeting of the Joint Consultative Committees of the Ministries chaired by Mr. G.L. Peiris and Minister of Justice Ali Sabri recently.
Susil Premajayantha, Minister of State for Education Reforms, Open Universities and Distance Education Promotion, and Rauf Hakeem, Member of Parliament, Sivagnanam Sritharan, Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Sagara Kariyawasam, Amarakeerthi Athugora, 8 members. Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Tikiri K. Mr. Jayathilaka will officiate.
The Hon. Minister of Justice Ali Sabri said that it is very important to impart a basic understanding of the law to the children of this country as the public’s knowledge of the law is at a very low level. The Minister of Justice emphasized that steps have been taken to provide citizen education on basic law in the developed countries of the world and that incorporating knowledge of law into the school curriculum is an urgent need.
The Minister of Education Prof. GL Peiris requested that the report containing the recommendations of this preliminary committee appointed on the program of adding law to the school curriculum be submitted within two months. Mr. G.L. Peiris instructed the committee members. Thereafter, on the recommendation of an expert committee, action should be taken to include law in the curriculum as soon as possible, he added.
