Former UK’s Secretary of State for International Development, MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan, has been appointed by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, as the UK’s International Champion to support countries like Sri Lanka to deal with climate change.
A press release issued by the British High Commission in Sri Lanka stated that the role of the Champion is to drive global ambition and action to support countries like Sri Lanka on the frontline of climate change to adapt to its impacts.
The appointment has been made in the purview of COP26, which is due to take place in Glasgow next year.
The statement read that with adequate support, countries and communities can adapt and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. Measures like early warning systems for storms, investing in flood drainage, and drought resistant crops are extremely cost-effective, saving not just money, but lives and livelihoods.
MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan stated that she is honored to have been appointed to the position.
