Workers’ struggles in plantation sector!

Plantation workers who have been isolated for nearly a month due to encounters with Covid infected people,
has started a protest alleging that they have not received any relief.

According to provincial correspondents,
nearly 1,000 estate workers at the Welioya Estate in Hatton staged a protest on the morning of 15th July in front of the main road leading to the estate.

The estate, which had been isolated since 21st May due to encounters with a number of people infected with the Covid 19 virus, has been reopened since this morning.

As soon as the isolation was lifted, the protesting plantation workers emphasized that no one had received any government subsidy or the Rs. 5,000 allowance given to low-income earners in isolated areas.

They allege that no one helped them as they were in dire financial straits and had revealed to the media that the management of the estate had not helped anyone.

The plantation workers, who have been losing their livelihoods for nearly a month and say they are suffering from severe economic hardship, have called on the government to expedite the relife or subsidise that given in other isolated areas.

Although the Welioya estate was removed from isolation today, Watawala police officers have strongly advised the protesters not to protest against the quarantine instructions, provincial correspondents further say.
