The Ministry of Justice announced plans to digitize the entire judicial process, including maintaining the files of the judiciary, managing the judiciary, keeping case records and issuing case reports, and paying fines online.
This program is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Justice, the Judicial Service Commission, the Ministry of Technology and the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, it was revealed at the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Justice in Parliament that three full time subcommittees on criminal law, civil law and commercial law reform are currently in operation.
The Minister in charge of the subject Ali Sabri had stated that the expert committee relevant to drafting the new constitution is currently in the process of doing so.
The discussion also focused on the congestion in prisons.
It was revealed that the majority of the prisoners are remand prisoners and there are approximately 8,000 convicts.
The Minister of Justice stated that 90 percent of the remand prisoners are drug addicts and not drug related criminals.
