The Government of India has issued a statement stating its position on the decision of the Government of Sri Lanka to retain 100% of the Eastern Container Terminal at the Port of Colombo.
The Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a statement that it expects the Sri Lankan government to act in accordance with the tripartite agreement reached in 2019 on the Eastern Container Terminal.
The statement reiterated the Government of India’s intention to expedite the implementation of the Tripartite Cooperation Agreement (MOC) signed in May 2019 between the Governments of India, Japan and Sri Lanka for the development of the Eastern Container Terminal.
The statement said that the Sri Lankan government, including the Sri Lankan leader, had on several recent occasions expressed its commitment in this regard.
It also states that the Cabinet of Ministers of Sri Lanka had taken a decision three months ago to implement this project with foreign investors.
The statement said that the present understanding and commitment of all parties in this regard should be maintained.
