A suspect detained at the Moneragala Prison has died after being assaulted by two prison officers at around 7.00 am yesterday (03).
Thesuspect has been identified as Upul Nilantha, 40, a resident of Nawagampura 04, Ampara. His nickname is Mecca.
He was arrested by the Ampara Police for theft and remanded for 14 days after being produced before court on the 28th. He was taken to the Moneragala Prison.
It is said that when a prison guard had gone to open the cell where the inmate was staying yesterday (03) morning, he had had an argument with the officer.
