Justice Minister Mohamed Ali Sabri said that, When the second wave of the Covid 19 virus spread inside the prison, there were 32,200 inmates in the prisons, but yesterday (05) it had been reduced to 26,364 inmates.
The interim report of the committee appointed by the Minister of Justice, President’s Counsel Mohamed Ali Sabri, to look into the recent incident at the Mahara Prison was handed over to President’s Counsel Mohamed Ali Sabri this afternoon (07).
The relevant committee is scheduled to submit a full report within a month.
The Minister of Justice, President’s Counsel Mohamed Ali Sabri stated as follows:
“Several investigations are being carried out into this incident. As the Ministry we have appointed a Board of Inquiry. We requested a full report on this. We must take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. We should report this to Parliament. As of October 12, 2020, there were 32,200 inmates in prisons after the second wave of the Covid 19 virus spread to prisons.
But by 05.12-2020 it has been reduced to 26364 prisoners. We have released 6000 in a few days. The systemic in the entire prison system needs to be considered. Our goal is to rehabilitate drug addicts. The entire prison system needs to be improved.
Rehabilitation camps should be set up instead of prisons and especially drug addicts should be freed from them. They need to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society, ”he said.
