As the North and East continue their four-day protests to win the rights of Tamils and Muslims, they have launched a hartal in the central highlands in support of the plantation workers’ struggle for years of unpaid basic wage increases.

According to provincial correspondents, a successful hartal will be launched on Friday, February 5, forcing plantation companies to increase the basic daily wage of plantation workers to 1,000 rupees.

The Secretary General of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, Minister of State for Estate Infrastructure and Community Empowerment Jeevan Thondaman has also told the media that the hartal campaign launched by the plantation workers is being carried out successfully.

According to provincial journalists, plantation workers are participating in the hartal without any trade union differences.
